For Changpeng Zhao, home has always been more of an inner world that transcends geographic boundaries than a physical address.

Although the lockdown caused by the coronavirus has kept Zhao in Asia for the past year, his usual routine has been to change locations every few months to spend time with employees and users that have sprung up around the world.

"I have the habit of moving around a lot, but that allows me to be more exposed to the world," says Zhao, who calls himself "CZ," in an interview. "I like to keep moving, I like to visit more places to find out what is happening in different places."

This kind of borderless life has given Zhao a front-row seat to the frictions and inefficiencies of converting fiat money, which refers to all currencies that are backed by government decrees.

"If you use fiat money for cross-border transactions, it is very difficult and the exchange rates are really abusive," he says. "If you change the currency at an airport, you lose around 10% each time, so the cost is very high."

Currently, Zhao tries to pay in crypto when and where he can. It does so using the Binance Visa card, which allows users to convert and spend their cryptocurrencies at more than 60 million merchants around the world, but is limited to customers living in Europe, according to its website.

"I use this card a lot, but sometimes I need cash," he explains. "I usually ask a friend and say 'hey do you have $500 you can give me? I'll give you some BNB (Binance Coin)', most of them will be polite enough to say yes so I manage that way.
