This Tuesday, the founder of Amazon surpassed Elon Musk and returned to occupy first place in the list of the richest people on the planet. Why did this happen?
Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, currently worth $ 191 billion USD according to the Bloomberg index, had long held the top spot as the richest man in the world until Elon Musk ousted him from this position. This week, however, Bezos has returned to the top spot.
Musk was the richest person in the world for a six-week period (with breaks), but he lost about $ 4.5 billion on Tuesday after Tesla shares fell 2.4%. This drop was enough to send him to second place on Bloomberg's list of billionaires.
Jeff Bezos' fortune took a hit that day as well, as the Stock Market generally took a loss but he did not lose as much as Musk. His fortune decreased only by $ 372 million, and this helped him regain the position as the richest man in the world, which he had held steadily for three years in a row.
2020 was a great year for Musk, as his wealth increased by $ 150 billion. The businessman owns 20% of Tesla, which posted a stock yield of more than 700% last year and was the most attractive stock among investors.
But Elon Musk, who is currently worth $ 190 billion, came to the top of the list of the richest people in the world in early January 2021, when shares of the Tesla Company soared.
On the other hand, Jeff Bezos also did very well during 2020, as his fortune increased by $ 75 billion, to reach a total of $ 173.3 billion, thanks to the increase in online sales driven by the pandemic.
Bill Gates, who for a few years was also the richest person in the world, is now in third place, with a fortune of $ 137 billion.
