Did you hear that a new coronavirus strain is hitting lots of countries and has just arrived in the U.S.? In this article you will find all the details!
A new coronavirus strain is hitting lots of countries and has just arrived in the U.S. This is really worrying for scientists and laboratories that had just created the new vaccines. Tests are being taken over the vaccines to check if they give protection towards the new strain.
This new strain is more contagious and has been found in 8 states of the USA and 33 countries around the world. This variant was first identified in the United Kingdom and continued to crop up across the U.S. and around the globe, threatening to further strain overburdened health care systems just as vaccines are rolling out worldwide.
At least eight U.S. states and 33 countries have identified the new variant, known as B.1.1.7. Several nations have also identified an additional variant, first identified in South Africa, that also appears to infect people more easily.
The strain first identified in the U.K. spreads more easily and quickly than other strains. The strain was first spotted in September in southeastern England and accounted for a quarter of cases in London by November. By the week of December 9, it was responsible for 60% of cases in the city.
Scientists in the U.K. estimate that the new variant is 40-70% more infectious based on analysis of affected populations in Britain. Let's hope it doesn't spread too much around the world and the situation can be controlled. However, we have no certainty about its results.
There is no evidence that B.1.1.7 causes more severe illness or increased risk of death. However, as it spreads quicker this can affect the hospital's capacity and availability.
