Broke? Meet the celebrities who were once broke, too!

Living on a budget is something a lot of people go through, no matter if they are rich and famous now. Here are some celebrities that were broke before making it big!

Matt LeBlanc: he had $11 before ‘Friends’, this is how much he has today

Matt LeBlanc is one of Hollywood’s most loved actors. He is known worldwide for playing Joey Tribbiani in the hit series ‘Friends’. Thanks to the decade-long show, LeBlanc gained fame and success, but he wasn’t always this lucky.

Before joining the cast of Friends, Matt LeBlanc appeared on a number of sitcoms, including ‘Top of the Heap’ and ‘Vinny & Bobby’. He left home to make it in New York City with only $11 in his pocket! He was ready to throw it all away and go back home, but that’s when he got the role in Friends, a part that changed everything for him.

How much is Matt LeBlanc worth today?

He managed to have a whopping net worth of $80 million, but he is a real rags-to-riches story.

Friends was a hit show and nobody really expected it to be so successful. It actually remains to be one of the classics up to this date. For the final two seasons, all cast members, which includes Matt LeBlanc, Jennifer Aniston, Courtney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matthew Perry, and David Schwimmer, were all making $1 million per episode. But things weren’t always this way.

Matt LeBlanc started his acting career in New York City in the late 80s. He landed some gigs, but he struggled to find permanent work and make a name for himself in the industry. Things were tough and, at some point, he only had $11 to his name.

After some consideration, the actor was ready to pack his bags and leave the city for good, but he received the news that changed his life forever: he was offered the role of Joey Tribbiani and he was making $75,000 for the first three seasons of the show.
Matt LeBlanc once said that the first thing he did with his first paycheck was buying a hot dinner for himself.

While LeBlanc made millions on the show, it is estimated that the entire cast makes on average $19 million in royalties, so he is still doing pretty good up to this day!

Lena Headey: she went from having $5 in her bank account to a $12 million net worth!

Lena Headey, known for playing Cersei Lannister on Game of Thrones, can surely tell the inside version of a real rags-to-riches story. She had a successful career before landing that role, but after her divorce, her bank account was reduced to just a few dollars.

In an interview with TIME Magazine, Headey said “I loved playing Cersei”, and it is thanks to that character she loved and admired that she was able to rebuild her fortune and see her net worth skyrocket to $12 million.

Cersei Lannister was one of the few characters of the series that made it to the end of the show, as her character died in the second to last episode of Season 8. Along with Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who played Jamie Lannister, Peter Dinklage, who played Tyrion Lannister, Emilia Clarke, who played Daenerys Targaryen, and Kit Harington, who played John Snow, Lena Headey was paid $1.1 million per episode for the final season of Game of Thrones.

However, before becoming Cersei Lannister, Lena divorced Peter Loughran and it nearly took everything she had. Documents revealed that Headey had less than $5 in her bank account after her divorce and that she survived on credit cards to pay for herself and her two-year-old son’s living expenses.

According to TMZ, the couple was arguing over a tax refund of $46,000 from 2011. Luckily enough, she found herself a job 2012, including her onscreen re-appearance in the leading role of Dredd. Later on, she appeared in Game of Thrones, which easily added to her bank account as she has made an estimated total of $30 million over the life of the series.

Her ex-husband is currently getting $9,000 in child support and living in a $3,300 rented apartment, all paid by Headey. Loughran, now unemployed, said in court documents posted by New York Daily News, that he used to be a hairstylist before marriage. “Lena urged me to quit my job and travel with her on her work as an actress and take care of our minor son,” he said.

Lana Del Rey: she had a $17,000 debt so she had to do all sorts of regular jobs in order to pay it off

Lana Del Rey has become really popular over the years and she lives the life of a celebrity: luxury, glamour, and million-dollar deals with brands like Gucci. But this wasn’t always the case for her.

Before making it big in the music industry, she has had a series of odd jobs to pay the bills —as a matter of fact, she was $17,000 in debt at that time!

As a teenager, she was waiting tables in Lake Placid, New York. At the age of 18, she moved to New York City to study metaphysics at Fordham University. She once told CNBC Make It that back in the day, she would take jobs off Craigslist.

“I’d be like a mover, you know, paint houses. I got paid actually not to paint, once I got hired… I was so bad” she joked.

Before making it as a musician, she was also singing in bars for nearly a decade. And she told CNBC that she took babysitting jobs well into her mid-20s.

Happily enough, she continued to pursue her dream even during those challenging times and she became who she is today, releasing a number of hit albums and singles like “Summertime Sadness” (2013), “Young and Beautiful” (2013), “West Coast” (2014), and “Love” (2017), to name a few.

She nailed a record deal in her mid-20s and she remembers quite well what she first spend her money on: “I paid off all my credit card debt,” Del Rey said, “$17,200.”
