Working from home: a quick guide you might want to keep in mind

The coronavirus pandemic has changed the way we do a lot of things. For example, more and more people are working from home. It’s time to review those ideas that will help you stay on track.

Working from home might sound like a dream come true to many people, but when it happens abruptly and with no time to get ready or to prepare your space, it might be more difficult. Especially if you have kids, who are also not going to school.

Here are some quick reminders that will help you stay on track:

1-    Lower your productivity expectations

You shouldn’t feel bad if you are working from home with your kids running around the house 24/7 and you don’t manage to get everything done. A huge part of succeeding at the work-from-home game is being realistic about your productivity. It might now take two days to accomplish what you usually did in one, but that’s ok. This is temporary.

2-    Try to give your kids something to do

It is important to come up with a plan that will keep your kids entertained without constant supervision. Crafts is usually the one that works best, as it keeps kids entertained for hours. Get them to draw things or to play with clay and come up with challenges for them to engage with the activity.

3-    Create a designated workspace

This is probably the most important thing to do. Ideally, you will have a spare room and you will turn it into an office, but if you don’t have a spare room, choose a remote corner of your home, if possible by a window, and set your desk up. If you have kids, it is probably a good idea to come up with a system for them to understand when you can be interrupted and when you cannot.

4-    Get started early

When you work from home, you usually have to deal with a lot of things that in a normal situation you wouldn’t. Because you are all day in the same space, you will deal with your house, with your kids and with your job during the same period of time.

Consider getting started earlier so you have more time. This is particularly helpful if you have kids, because you will get a lot of work done before they wake up.
