Tips to consider when starting a pet shop

If you're an entrepreneur looking for a lucrative new business, you may be considering opening a pet shop. Before taking the first step, you should take some key aspects into account.

Running a pet-related shop isn’t like any other business. It's true, pets owners spend a lot of money on food, accessories, pet clothes, toys, etc. They also willingly pay for services like dog grooming, pet's training and even daycare. But on the other hand, there are a lot of extra precautions to take into consideration, as your business involves treating with living creatures.

First of all, you should consult your local government about permits or licenses that you may need to open such a business. Then, ask your accountant about the best legal form to do it: as a proprietorship, limited liability company, or other entity.

Just like any new project, you need to build a business plan in order to: see how much you’ll need to invest to start, calculate the potential earnings, evaluate the competition, etc. You should define if your store will be physical, online, or a combination of both. While a web-based store has a much lower startup cost, a retail store is more exposed and bound to get more customer traffic, but it involves additional costs for rent, employee’s salaries, and insurance.

Take your time to research the competition that's already working in this field. Figure out what you could offer to stand out from them. Search for providers and prices, and build an imaginary inventory to get an approach to the costs. Look at the current market prices to establish potential earnings.

Additionally, you should define what kind of store you would be comfortable running. You can sell products, like pet care supplies, clothing, bedding, travel carriers, toys, and gift baskets. You can also offer extra services like daycare, or grooming treatments. You should analyze the profit margins in each area.

If you have no experience in this field, try to gain some by working with pet-related companies. This way, you'll get to know about marketing trends, customers’ needs. At the same time, you can start a network related to your future store. This first-hand experience will help you a lot when building your own business and making better decisions in this field.
