There are certain questions that an interviewer will ask you during an interview that is not related to the job itself, or not even to the industry. These are questions about yourself and about how you behave in certain situations. A smart move is to always be prepared for those questions.
At a glance, answering the question ‘what are your personal strengths?’ might seem easy, but it isn’t. You want to show your interviewer that you have great qualities, but you don’t want to overdo it and seem too cocky.
Here are a few things to consider:
Identify your strengths
Prepare for the interview by identifying your most important strengths. Make a list of all your skills and qualities and then select the ones that best depict why you would be a good addition to the team. Take note of all the things you enjoy and find what strength comes with it. For example, if you enjoy playing Sudoku, you might mention that you are a critical thinker and a problem solver.
You can also identify your strengths by taking online tests. A lot of universities and agencies offer aptitude tests that will help you find this.
Quality over quantity
You might be tempted to mention an endless list of all your qualities and skills, but there is no need to do that. Select three or four of your most important aptitudes and provide detailed information about them and how they will be a good addition to the role.
Back up your strengths
Share stories that demonstrate the skills you’ve selected. This will make a good impression on your interviewer and will let them fully understand what your skills are and what you have to offer.
When an interviewer asks you about your strengths, they are trying to determine if you have the necessary skill set to work in that particular position or industry. Select skills that are perfect for that particular job and stick to them. It is much better to focus on these than to name all your qualities.
